Our group meeting is monthly and each will take about 1.75 hours. The group meeting is composed of three sections:
- Research update (~45 mins)
- Literature update (~30 mins)
- Professional development (~30 mins)
Research Update (~ 45 mins)
One presenter will give a brief, informal update about their research progress. The presentation could include (but not limited to) background introductions, details of methods, preliminary results, and unsolved problems. You should plan for this to be ~30 minutes of content with 15 minutes for answering questions.
At this time, there is no set style on the research updates.
Literature Update (~ 30 mins)
One presenter will present a literature review talk on one research paper. Here are the guidelines for theĀ literatureĀ talk:
- Pick a new or classical paper that you think is interesting. Feel free to pick different papers from your research topic if you want. The purpose of this is to get every group member exposed to papers they may not open up and read on their own.
- Ideal presentation structure is: A title slide (with authorsā name and affiliation), 1 slide on background, 1 slide on mathematical modeling/methods, 1-2 slides on the main results, and 1 slide with critiques/overall conclusions.
- On the title slide, make sure toĀ talkĀ about the journal that the paper is published in (domains that this journal usually publishes, your thoughts about the journal); talkĀ about the authors, and your familiarity with their other works. The goal here is to build background knowledge on the journal and to improve your awareness of researchers in our field.
- On the modeling slide, briefly introduce the models used in the paper. This is a good chance to practice your teaching ability!
- On the main results slides, pick a handful of the most important figures that you personally were interested in, and describe the main conclusions of the study. Stay focused and concise so that everyone in the group feels that they can grasp the main conclusions.
- For the critique slide, think about what the paper did really well, and if it is something that you would like to do in your own research. Think about what the paper did poorly with proper justifications, and mention how the work can be improved- this is a good practice for thinking like a reviewer!

Professional Development (~ 30 mins)
A presenter will present a topic related to professional development. This will range from soft skills to technical skills.
